Head winemaker Rafael Urrejola has spent a great deal of time researching and understanding the diversity of Chile’s vineyard sites; the result is the emblematic ‘Terroir Hunter’ range. In 2023, Rafael became the first Chilean winemaker to be awarded ‘Red Winemaker of the Year 2023’ by the prestigious International Wine Challenge (IWC). On the nose, the wine has enticing aromas of, lime and mandarin which are complemented by herbal and mineral overtones of fennel and gooseberry leaf. This is a vibrant and juicy Sauvignon Blanc with refreshing, zesty acidity and delicate mineral notes.

The grapes for this wine are grown in Saint Clair’s vineyard in the Gimblett Gravels region of Hawkes Bay. The 10-year-old vines are planted on the stoniest part of the vineyard. These stony soils are vigour moderating freedraining soils, ideal for growing Viognier. Fermentation took place in stainless tanks with carefully selected yeast to enhance the varietal characters. The wine was left on the yeast lees imparting texture and complexity. This is an elegant wine displaying prominent notes of white peach, nectarine and fragrant almond blossom with hints of clove and nutmeg spice. It is rich and creamy on the palate with a fresh and spicy finish.

 

‘Bush Vines’ Chenin Blanc Swartland Winery 2022

The grapes came from a single vineyard and 100% bush vines with an age range of between 25 to 30 years. They were harvested at optimal phenolic ripeness before undergoing fermentation in stainless steel tanks at controlled temperatures of 12.5°C, lasting 10 to 14 days. 40% of the wine was barrel fermented in older oak, imparting subtle oak complexity. Ageing took place on the fine lees for six months in 225-litre French oak barrels. This wine has inviting aromas of orange blossom and citrus which lead to a full, rich palate with hints of spice. The lush, tropical fruit flavours are underpinned by beautifully integrated oak and a long, butterscotch finish.

The vineyard is situated 15 kilometres south of Nîmes, in the heart of the Costières de Nîmes region. To produce this wine, the two varieties were harvested at optimal maturity and the grapes from each variety were pressed and vinified separately. Cool fermentation took place at controlled temperatures with selected yeasts to preserve the purity of the fruit flavours. The wines were then artfully blended to make this cuvée. This is a delicate pale pink rosé with enticing aromas of fresh wild strawberries and hints of grapefruit. It has a refreshing and persistent finish which is completed by subtle hints of nectarine.

A blend of Sauvignon Blanc and Malbec varietals sourced from selected vineyard sites in the Marlborough region and cultivated using a sustainable approach. The grapes spent a few hours macerating on the skins to extract the soft pink colour before being carefully pressed. After settling, the juice was fermented in 100% stainless steel tanks at cool temperatures to retain fruit flavour and freshness. This is a pale, refreshing and elegant rosé made in a lighter style (only 9.5% vol). It shows delicate notes of perfumed cherry blossom and juicy red berries and has a seamless texture complemented by a lifted finish.

 

Durif ‘Winemakers Reserve’

Durif is a cross between Syrah and little-known variety called Peloursin and is sometimes known as Petite Sirah. This parcel of Durif has been chosen from a single vineyard, the ‘Foleys Corner Vineyard’, which overlooks Griffith in the Riverina, New South Wales. Durif is well suited to the climate of the Riverina region, which is hot and dry. Intense aromas of violets, blackberry and subtle chocolate notes are showcased in this inky, dark Durif. Notes of blackberry, anise and smoky liquorice fill the concentrated palate, while the well-integrated mocha-oak influence and tight tannins add complexity and depth and lead through to a long, flavoursome finish.

In 1999, Geoff McIver established the Lomond estate, which is situated on the Agulhas Plain near the southernmost tip of Africa at Cape Agulhas – the confluence of the Indian and Atlantic Oceans- eight kilometres from the fishing village of Gansbaai and within sight of the sea. The estate takes its name from the Ben Lomond Mountain in the Uilenkraal Valley. The wine has appealing aromas of blackberry and raspberry leading to a smooth, rich palate with polished and integrated tannins enveloping cherry notes. The wine has beautifully integrated oak which delivers delicate spicy notes leading through to a long, elegant finish.

Michele Chiarlo leads the way in the production of Barbera d’Asti and over the past 50 years they have devoted time, research and investment into the vineyards and cellar, resulting in this highly regarded wine. This Barbera d’Asti is named after the Orme su La Court, Michele Chiarlo’s artistic park. Oak ageing lasted for three months, imparting a subtle complexity, but the final blend overall retains its freshness and the varietal Barbera characteristics. This is an elegant and intense Barbera, bursting with notes of ripe cherry and redcurrant and layered with a touch of spice. It is harmonious, rounded and beautifully balanced with a lovely savoury finish.

Pierre Naigeon is a renowned producer in the Côtes de Nuits. The Naigeon family has been established in Gevrey-Chambertin for over 100 years. They acquired some vines and started to produce wine in 1890.The grapes for this wine come from the lieu-dit of ‘Grand Champs’, just to the southeast of Gevrey Chambertin, which covers 41 hectares. The 50-year-old vines are low-yielding, producing concentrated fruit with excellent balance. The wine is a charming Pinot Noir with elegant aromas of black fruits, liquorice and thyme leading through to a textured palate with lovely balance. It has notes of wild raspberry and black cherry which lead to a long, silky finish.

Ernst subscribes to the French philosophy that the quality of the grape is inextricably linked to the ‘terroir’, so he travels to various regions throughout the Western Cape and handpicks his grapes in the areas where they naturally grow at their very best. The vines are grown in sustainably certified vineyards. This is a classic example of this uniquely South African red wine. It is a distinctively rich ruby colour, with bold aromatics of dark chocolate, stewed fruit, spice and hints of coffee. On the palate, the silky tannins and integrated oak ensure elegance and balance and lead to an
endless finish.
