An often overlooked grape variety but one of immense variety and versatility, it's time to celebrate Drink Chenin Blanc Day! Although this grape variety is of French origin, Chenin Blanc has risen to fame in South Africa. The list of other New World countries which followed the trend of growing Chenin Blanc includes Australia, New Zealand, USA, and Mexico. This grape variety blooms early and ripens late. It is quite resistant to drought but is very sensitive to cold spring temperatures. The climate and the soil greatly affect the style of the wine. On the one hand, clay soils are favorable for dessert wines, on the other hand, well-drained soil and a lot of sand will give lighter wines. Chenin Blanc can be used in production of different wine from dry and fruity to sparkling wines such as those from Crémant de Loire d 'Anjou, Saumur, and Touraine - the regions which largely rely on the grape. Chenin Blanc is often blended with Chardonnay and Torrontés to create slightly lighter wines. You will discover an extensive selection of top class Chenin Blanc in our wine department, "Upstairs at Campbell's." Here are just a few of our many favourites... |

Bruce Jack Wines Off the Charts Swartland Skin Contact Chenin Blanc The grapes were hand-picked from three distinct vineyards in Swartland. The grapes from each of the vineyards were vinified separately to accentuate the subtleties of each of the blocks. 45% of the grapes were destemmed and underwent 24 hours of skin contact, followed by gentle pressing in a pneumatic press and fermentation in stainless steel. The fruit from the younger bush vines was fermented in concrete tanks, while the older bush vine fruit accounted for 11% and was fermented on the lees in old 300-litre French barrels, at cooler temperatures due to the higher solids content. The wine was aged on the fine lees for a few months, before being bottled while youthful and fresh. Mouthwatering notes of lush tropical fruits gracefully intermingle with floral hints and vibrant citrus undertones through to a crisp, refreshing finish. |
