Tokaji wines have enjoyed a long, glorious history. Louis XIV of France described them as "The wine of Kings and King of wines”, whilst Catherine the Great of Russia stationed a contingent of Cossack soldiers in the region to protect the vineyards and escort the wine on its journey to St. Petersburg. Many European monarchs are known to have enjoyed Tokaji wines. Louis XV and Frederick the Great treated guests such as Voltaire to Tokaji. Napoleon III ordered 30–40 barrels of Tokaji for the Imperial Court each year. Gustav III of Sweden drank only Tokaji. The Emperor Franz Joseph sent Queen Victoria a gift of Tokaji every year on her birthday - a dozen bottles for each year of her age. Over the years Tokaji has been a favourite wine of great writers and composers including Beethoven, Liszt, Schubert, Goethe, Johann Strauss, Joseph Haydn and Bram Stoker, the creator of Dracula. After a turbulent period that included the Phylloxera outbreak, enterprising winemakers have put Tokaj back on the map past two decades. As a result wine lovers., today, can enjoy the classic Aszú-style sweet wines as well as tongue-tingling dry whites like Furmint and Hárslevelű, savoury signals of this historic region’s exciting outlook. The Royal Tokaji Winery Royal Tokaji was established in 1990 when a group of 62 vineyard owners came together with overseas investors led by Hugh Johnson, the noted British author and wine historian. From the outset their goal has been to revive and bring back to international acclaim the wines of one of history’s most renowned wine regions. Of their 108 hectares of vineyards, 57 hectares are situated in three First Growths - Szt. Tamás, Nyulászó, Betsek - and in one Great First Growth of Mézes Mály. These vineyards have been considered to be among the greatest in the region since the early 18th Century. Their 14th Century cellars provide the perfect environment for ageing the wines. The potential lifespan of some of these wines can be measured in centuries rather than mere decades. While inspired by the incomparable history of this unique region we are committed to a continual quest for improvement. In 2010 a new trailblazing winery was completed giving our winemakers access to the very best technology and equipment which would be the envy of our forefathers. Royal Tokaji remains in private ownership and our wines are exported to over 30 countries.  Royal Tokaji, Blue Label 5 Puttonyos Aszú, 50cl,2017, Hungary Only £42.99 Tasting Note Fine quality Aszú berries with good flavour, balance and perfect botrytis were macerated in fermenting must for two days. After pressing and finishing fermentation, the wines were filled into 300 and 500 litre Hungarian oak casks in our extensive, deep, underground cellars to mature for over two years. The final blends were carefully crafted in the spring of 2020. |
