We have had our first seasonal delivery of wines from one of our specialist suppliers at the end of last week, so that means the countdown to Christmas has started! Hallgarten Wines are one of our biggest suppliers and always promote their seasonal range from September onwards, unlike the majority of others who start theirs from October. Store Manager Richard recently met up with Accountant Manager Paul Collins, to taste through a selection of their offerings just to vouch that the quality is up to Campbell's high standards! Nose of baked nectarines and custard, with a hint of nutmeg. Creamy with telltale flecks of deconstructed granite, bringing sparkles of minerality and ozone. NEW Lomond Wines Sauvignon Blanc ‘Pincushion’, 2022, Cape Agulhas, South Africa, 75cl rrp £19.99 Special Offer Only £15.99 Tasting Note What an astonishing white wine! When you know, you know… Silver and green hues reflect through a pale but dense looking liquid. The nose initially hits with a grassy, fecund, feynbos (South African undergrowth) note, backed up by a hint of lavender and crushed oyster shells, very much a signature aroma of Cape Agulhas. On the palate, it has an almost immediate salinity, layered over Meyer lemon zest and a vivid, almost sumac-like tartness. It is compact and full of tension, unfurling slowly on the finish. Bruce Jack Chenin Blanc Skin Contact, ‘Off the Charts’, 2023, Swartland, South Africa 75cl rrp £13.49 Special Offer Only £11.49 Tasting Note The Chenin Blanc vineyards lie at the heart of Swartland at elevations ranging from 60 to 300 metres above sea level. Nestled in ancient sandstone and shale soils, the vineyards benefit from a unique combination of factors. Chenin Blanc is a standout varietal here and thrives whether grown on trellises or as bush vines. The soils and dry land conditions are particularly suited for bush vine cultivation, resulting in small berries bursting with layered flavours, rich colour and soft tannin structures. On the palate, mouth-watering notes of lush tropical fruits gracefully intermingle with floral hints and vibrant citrus undertones through to a crisp, refreshing finish. |
NEW Bruce Jack Wines Viognier, ‘Off the Charts’, 2023 Swartland, South Africa 75cl rrp £13.49 Special Offer Only £11.49 Tasting Note To ensure a medley of layered fruit flavours and aromatic freshness, a specific approach was employed in the in the cellar by working exclusively with free-run juice, followed by slow and controlled fermentation at low temperatures. 47% was barrel fermented and matured in neutral oak for four months, while 53% was fermented in stainless steel tanks and aged on the fine lees in tank to retain the vibrancy of the fruit. This wine is an enticing and invigorating Viognier with aromatic and luscious notes of peach and apricot leading to a vibrant palate full of character and charm. |
NEW Franciacorta ‘61 Rosé’ Guido Berlucchi NV, Lombardy, Italy 75cl rrp £39.99 Special Offer Only £32.99 Tasting Note The grapes come from the best vineyards of the Franciacorta DOCG, in Lombardy, where the topography follows an amphitheatre shape formed by ancient glacial activity. The Morainic soils were formed during the last Ice Age; gravelly, stony soils are well drained and rich in minerals. The vineyards are greatly influenced by the cold winds coming from the Alps; however, the continental climate is mitigated by the effects of Lake d’Iseo. This is a soft, gently sparkling rosé with elegant notes of wild, ripe berries, complemented by subtle toasty nuances. It is tangy and crisp, with a long refreshing finish. NEW Llopart ‘Corpinnat’ Reserva Brut,Catalonia, Spain 75cl Only £18.99 Tasting Note Llopart is a top-quality producer of organic, Traditional Method sparkling wines from their country estate Can Llopart de Subirats, located in one of the highest areas of Penedès. The family’s long winemaking history dates to 1385 and since then, 26 generations have cultivated the family vineyards. In 1887, Llopart created its first sparkling wines, but it was during the early 1950s, that Pere Llopart Vilarós actively contributed to the promotion of their ‘artisanal’ sparkling wines. This is a smooth and vibrant sparkling wine with a fine, constant mousse and clean, refreshing aromas of white peach and citrus notes layered with delicate biscuity nuances. |
Old Vine Savatiano ‘Orivatis’, Akriotou 2022, Sterea Ellada, Greece 75cl rrp £15.99 Special Offer Only £11.99 Tasting Note Vasiliki Akriotou is an oenologist with over 20 years’ experience in the wine industry. In 2015, she created her first range of wines from a micro-winery in the heart of Greece, which reflected her philosophy of winemaking. The vineyards are situated among the snow-capped mountains at altitudes of 280 to 380 metres above sea level. Made from the native Savatiano grape, this wine offers a complex and aromatic bouquet of ripe peach, quince, creamy vanilla and an intriguing hint of Turkish delight. It is dry with perfectly balanced freshness, intense notes of grapefruit, pepper, ginger and wild mint which lead to a long and spicy finish. |
NEW Chablis 1er Cru Montmains, Domaine Jean Goulley Magnum 2021 Burgundy, France, 1.5ltr rrp £75.99 Special Offer Only £63.99 Tasting Note Montmains is a Premier Cru vineyard in Chablis, which stretches along an exposed hillside to the south west of the town of Chablis itself. It is renowned for producing fresh, elegant wines with good minerality. Maud and her family believe in the ethos of organic farming along with that of minimal intervention; all of their vineyards are farmed organically. An intense mineral nose is followed by fresh vibrant fruit, crisp acidity and citrus notes. Beautifully balanced, this is pure and round on the palate, with a creamy texture and a long, salivating finish. It is a great example of a classic Chablis. |
Berton Vineyard Botrytis Semillon, Reserve, 2019, NSW, Australia 37.5cl rrp £14.49 Special Offer Only £10.99 Tasting Note The fruit is left on the vine for a significantly longer time than other Semillon to encourage the growth of Botrytis, which desiccates the skin allowing the moisture to evaporate. The berries are harvested at optimum maturity. This is a luscious wine with intense and layered aromas of orange rind, apricot and honey. The vibrant palate delights with notes of apricot and almond biscotti which carry through to a beautifully balanced finish enhanced by toasted notes and subtle spice. |
