04 December, 2024

Black Friday Update Errazuriz Las Pizarras...  244 bottles sold so far!!

It seems like Black Friday fever even reached Campbells last week, as the 90 bottles of this top end Pinot we ordered sold out in around 4 hours! We managed to get another 12 cases for delivery next day which by the time it arrived had been accounted for, so another 15 cases came on Thursday, and we have managed to get another 72 bottles in today, which is already going, so if you have haven't yet managed to secure any we wouldn't leave it too long as our supplier is fast running out.

Errazuriz Las Pizarras
Pinot Noir 2020, Aconcagua, Chile

This is without doubt the biggest ever deal we have had on any wine in Store Managers time working at Campbell's, which is now over 35+ years! Heavily reduced to clear, as our supplier now has stocks of 2021 vintage and with 2022 due imminently, they have offered it out at well below cost price, which the saving made we have passed on, to offer this top end wine at an amazing price. We are also offering a even better deal on a presentation wooden case purchase which would make an ideal Christmas gift for that Pinot lover.

Just to emphasis how good a wine this is, the 2018 vintage was rated among the top 10 wines in the world by James Suckling, with a score of 99pts. It was the best placed Chilean wine and second best Pinot Noir. This 2020 vintage may not quite hit those heights, but does still score very highly among the critics.

2020 Errazuriz, Las Pizarras Pinot Noir, Aconcagua

James Suckling 97pts
An enticing pinot with rich, glossy raspberries, grapes, chalk, forest-floor berries, roses, white pepper and exotic spices. This is really tight and chalky on the palate, with super-fine, mealy tannins and an extremely long, linear finish. Very pretty, elegant and nuanced. Drinkable now, but best after 2024. Part of South American Pinot Noir: 20 to try
A Burgundy-style Pinot Noir made by Francisco Baettig with grapes from a vineyard in Aconcagua Costa where the soils are rich in slate and iron, this wine is wild fermented, 10% with whole bunches, and aged in 300-litre barrels. The complex nose features sweet, smoky spices, rose, cherry and blood aromas, while on the palate it’s harmonious and fresh with compact tannins that channel the flow.

Campbell's sales manager for this producer, Sandy Greetham, also has made his own notes and has visited the vineyards himself:

Errázuriz Las Pizarras Pinot Noir 2020

1. It is the top Pinot Noir bottling from this iconic Errázuriz estate and is in its prime drinking window. Perfect for Christmas drinking. Sleek bottle, with wax seal.

2. Consistently given high praise and scores by all the top critics as Chiles leading Pinot Noir. It's all about purity here. The grapes ripen slowly giving more elegance, nuance and poise.  A highly aromatic and fine juicy fruited Pinot, held in a wonderful textural structure with a very fine velvet finish. Coming from the highly desirable 777 clone, three specific vineyards in different locations add distinctive and complex flavour profiles to this breath-taking Pinot Noir.

3. 94pts Tim Atkin, “Structured…intense, with some extra backbone and perfume…this is a grippy, deftly wooded Pinot with earthy intensity and enough tannic backbone to age well in bottle”. Vinous, “Cherry red in the glass. The layered nose offers precise notes of strawberry and sour cherry, hints of elderberry, and traces of blood, sweet spice... In the mouth, this is structured around the freshness and fine-grained, reactive tannins that tickle the gums before the long, fruity finish.

4. Small production, approx. 500 cases made, sited on a ‘Grand Cru’ terroir.

Las Pizarras Pinot Noir – The ‘Las Pizarras’ Pinot Noir comes from the Aconcagua Costa Estate, specifically from ‘Grand Cru’ sites named after the unique slate-rich soils that overlook the Pacific Ocean. This breath-taking coastal Pinot Noir is produced from three specific and well-appointed vineyards, each sited with a diverse micro-climate and cool costal location 12km from the sea. All three are tiny meaning production is naturally very low. Made in a European style with some whole-bunch fermentation and aged in French oak the wine has rich dark red and black fruit profile and toasty aromas matched by savoury mineral notes on the palate. Its fine, yet juicy with wonderful textural quality that is offset beautifully by the refreshing tannins. In a nod to the old-world, it has fruit purity, is bright and light on its feet, with amazing poise, as well as an overriding sense of freshness.

Vineyards
Sourced entirely from our Aconcagua Costa Estate from specific blocks that have a significant component of metamorphic rock including slate (pizarras, in Spanish). Given the extremes of this cool climate site, as well as the uniqueness of its soils and elevations, each small block ripens at its own pace. Its proximity to the cool Pacific Ocean and its well-drained soils, with high level of slate and metamorphic rock, allow the Estate to produce Pinot Noir of exceptional complexity, depth, minerality and natural acidity.

Vintage
Undoubtedly a very challenging 2020 season, presenting the driest winter of the last 50 years. The vineyards in the Aconcagua Region had to endure an intense hydric marathon to accomplish ripeness. Warm temperatures, especially in springtime, ended the season with a slightly colder March and April. Moderate crop yield and abundant irrigation in summer helped maintain the freshness and quality.

Winemaking
All grapes were handpicked between February 20th and February 28th and rigorously sorted out Hand before placing them directly into small open-top fermenters (15% whole cluster). 100% of the fruit had a cold maceration at 8‰ to 10‰C for 4 to 5 days before starting fermentation with native yeasts, followed by an extended average maceration period of up to 20 days. Daily gentle punch downs made Hand helped to keep the cap moist. Las Pizarras Pinot Noir was aged for 13 months in French oak barrels, 32% new.
