Whisky Corner Recommendations
20 January, 2025

Whether you're celebrating Burns Night or not, here's just a wee selection of some stand-out malts from our Whisky Corner, Upstairs at Campbell's. Although made from only 3 main ingredients (water, yeast and cereal grains) the incredible range of flavour profiles is what makes malt whisky such a popular spirit!

Just check out the tasting notes on these marvellous malts...

Isle of Harris The Hearach Whisky

The Hearach single malt whisky is made using soft Outer Hebridean waters from the Abhainn Cnoc a ’Charrain, which runs over the oldest rocks on earth, and 100% Scottish Concerto barley that was lightly peated at 12-15ppm using peat cut by hand at 'Cleite Mhòr', an area of South Harris where peat has been harvested for generations. This Scotch also benefits from a long fermentation that runs for up to five days, as well as maturation for at least five years in three cask types, Fino butts, first-fill bourbon, and oloroso sherry casks. The island's unique climate will also play a big role in the profile of The Hearach, which was bottled at 46% ABV without chill-filtration or any additional colouring.

Tasting Notes

Nose: Beach bonfires, orchard fruits, ginger, vanilla, and floral honey.
Palate: Scottish tablet, apples, nutty malt, clotted cream, and gentle peat smoke.
Finish: Bright and delicately smoky.

Port Charlotte 10 Year Old Heavily Peated Islay Single Malt

This 10 year old Port Charlotte has been conceived, distilled, matured and bottled on Islay alone. On Islay they believe that an Islay whisky should live and breathe the fresh, salty tang of Islay air, all its life. This is not a spirit distilled on the island and immediately shipped off to the mainland to mature in some undisclosed warehouse. '' A whisky made by people not software; A whisky watched over every day of its maturing life by those who made it; A whisky born of a community, of a vision and a burning desire to kick-start a single malt whisky revolution. This Port Charlotte 10 year old is who we are, this is where we're from.'' - Bruichladdich Distillery.

Tasting Notes

Nose: The smoke is calmed by the marine, ozone character, time has brought a balance, a harmony in the combination of oak, smoke and spirit. While the smoke is always discernible on the nose it is dry, earthy, peatash in its style and so allows the oak to come forward with waves of golden caramel, fudge, vanilla custard, hints of ginger, nutmeg and clove. There is citrus fruit, coaxed from the glass with a drop of water, gentle lemon meringue and clementine.
Palate: On the palate there is a noticeable delicacy and softness in texture and style. Again, the balance of flavour is superb as the smoke wraps loosely around the sweetness drawn from deep within the oak. Coconut, vanilla custard, lemon honey combines with smoked oysters and sun baked salty sand.
Finish: The finish is sublime, smoky sure, but also the soft sweetness of fudge and malted barley, orange, mango and Banoffee pie hinting of the depth and quality of the oak. The many layers interchange on each sip. As the smoke comes and goes so too the notes of the spirit, ripe apple and apricot, beautifully intertwined with malt and oak sweetness and that typical Port Charlotte style dry smoke.

Lochlea Fallow Edition Whisky

The third in the series of seasonal limited releases from Lochlea. Fallow Edition (First Crop) has been matured entirely in first-fill oloroso sherry casks, for plenty of rich, autumnal fruit character. This single malt Scotch whisky is made with barley grown on the Lochlea farm, and has been bottled non-chill filtered, at 46% ABV.

Tasting Notes

Nose: Plenty of sherry character, with juicy plums, poached apple, and warm pancakes.
Palate: Dried prunes and figs, spiced fruitcake, earthy grist, and twists of aniseed.
Finish: Dark treacle, drizzles of honey, and winter spices.

Bladnoch 11 Year Old Bourbon Cask

An 11 year old, Bourbon cask expression from this Lowland distiller. A chance to try the Bladnoch character a more obvious form, with Bourbon casks allowing the spirits flavour to come through.

Tasting Notes

Nose: Fragrant honey with a smidge of floral breeze to it.
Palate: Still delicately floral, with layers of caramel and oak appearing.
Finish: Cooked apple, peppercorn, and violet sweeties.
