Tasting Note
Las Pizarras Chardonnay 2020 has a clean, bright straw-yellow colour. The elegant nose opens with citrus tones followed by nuts, a touch of pastry, and a subtle note that recalls white flowers. The citrus profile predominates on the palate, accompanied by notes of marzipan and walnuts, a touch of pear, and subtle redcurrant tart tones. The palate starts fresh, extremely deep, and persistent, displaying complexity and delicious acidity, along with a mineral sensation that makes this a tense, elegant wine.

Errázuriz Las Pizarras Chardonnay 2020: The ‘Las Pizarras’ Chardonnay comes from the Aconcagua Costa Estate, specifically from ‘Grand Cru’ sites named after the unique slate-rich soils that overlook the Pacific Ocean. This is the top white in their portfolio coming from a diverse micro-climate and cool costal location 12km from the sea. Three specific vineyards in different locations add distinctive and complex flavour profiles to this breathtaking costal chardonnay, giving it a true sense of place. The vines are approaching 20 years of age, giving depth, texture, and concentration, that along with the mineral rich soils impart a mouthwatering salinity to this very European styled wine.

Why buy:
1.Outstanding value for a beautifully Chardonnay in its prime drinking window, with great freshness, richness, and complexity, yet offers poise, elegance and 12.5% alcohol.

2.The top white in the Errázuriz portfolio, the jewel in their crown. Consistently given high praise and scores by all the top critics as Chiles leading Chardonnay. It competes comfortably with high-end Domaine’s globally. The grapes ripen slowly giving more nuance, complexity, and texture. Its character and DNA hold a true sense of place.

3.Three specific plots of Chardonnay vines for Las Pizarras, in different locations all very small(0.7hect/1 hect/3.2hect) Add distinctive flavour profiles to the wine. Planted in 2005 and 2009. In this first-class location, grapes ripen slowly so they develop complex flavour nuances.

4.Knockout scores and reviews: 97 James Suckling, “Real depth for a chardonnay, Pure, full-bodied and mouthwatering...with a textured palate” | 96 Wine Advocate, “It's tasty and spicy, elegant and balanced, with purity and the minerality that is the flagship from this wine”   | 96 Tim Atikin “The latest in a run of superb releases of this world-class Chardonnay …, the 2020 was picked early in a warmer year. Volumes were down, but the quality is undiminished, showing subtle citrus and beeswax flavours, a hint of nutmeg and vanilla and the thrilling, stony intensity that's the hallmark of the terroir”. | 94 Vinous, “Yellow in colour, with a delicate nose of mild hazelnut, apple, linden blossom, honey, acacia, hints of herbs and a whiff of mint. In the mouth…a chalky, saline feel that injects energy and tension before the long, bold finish”.

5.Small production, approx. 800 cases made, sited on a ‘Grand Cru’ terroir.  Wine Advocate call it is “more Chablis than Meursault” in style.

Vintage and harvest info:
• 2020 vintage: A warm and complex 2020 season, presenting the driest winter of the last 50 years. Warm and dry, with early harvest, strict selection and carful irrigation management helped maintain the freshness and quality. Small yields kept concentration.

• Grapes were hand-harvested between February 8th to 11th during the early morning hours to ensure the fruit arrives at the winery under cool temperatures and ready for 100% whole cluster pressing. The juice was clarified by cold decanting, without the use of enzymes, before being racked to French oak barrels to be fermented with native yeasts. To preserve the fresh character of the site, 40% of blend underwent malolactic fermentation progressing slowly in the cellar until an ideal acid- balance was achieved.

• The wine aged for 13 months in 400 L French oak barrels, 30% of them new, indigenous yeasts for fermentation.
