.jpg) Five casks. One seriously interesting whisky. What makes Release No.2 particularly interesting is what’s happening inside the bottle. This is a 16-year-old single malt Scotch whisky, bottled at 43%, and has been matured using five different types of cask: first-fill bourbon barrels, Port pipes, Oloroso sherry casks, red wine casks and, finally, Fino sherry butts. It’s an impressive bit of whisky-making, with each type of cask contributing something different to the finished dram. The result is a Glenfiddich that retains the distillery’s characteristic fruit-forward style but with considerably more depth, richness and structure. What does it taste like? On the nose: rich stewed fruits and delicate floral notes, with hints of marzipan and polished leather. Add a tiny splash of water and the ripe fruit character becomes even more pronounced. On the palate: wonderfully mellow and silky, with creamy, buttery toffee sweetness followed by caramelised cane sugar and elegant dry oak tannins. The finish: long, warming and gently oaky, with a lingering sweetness that keeps you coming back for another sip. It's a beautifully balanced whisky... sweet and rich to begin with but with enough dry oak and sherry influence to give it some real complexity. |
